Finishing the interproximal areas of composite restorations to create proper anatomic contour and, at the same time, maintain the ideal contact is often not as simple as it seems. These areas are traditionally treated with long diamond or abrasive strips that are not only difficult to manage in posterior areas from a dexterity and access standpoint but can also be uncomfortable for the patient, as the non-working end often goes “down the patient’s throat.” While there are similar systems on the market, the active cutting surfaces are too thick and do not contour to the tooth surface, resulting in a f at proximal contour and, many times, no contact! ContacEZ Strips are easy to manipulate, come in a variety of grits and are
thin enough to maintain the contour and contact of the restoration while completing the f nishing procedures. Other indications include controlled interproximal reduction for orthodontics and using a safe-sided, sawtoothed
cutting instrument with no side action to remove excess crown and bridge cement or bonding resin (and/or cement) stuck in contacts during bonding and cementation procedures.

Catapult reviewer comments
When asked about the comfort and ergonomics of using ContacEZ in the oral cavity, 100 percent of Catapult reviewers found the system comfortable to use. Several remarked ContacEZ was easier to use in interproximal contact areas than traditional long, thin type abrasive strips. When comparing the use of ContacEZ Strips to other systems, some of the responses include:

  • In regards to separating bonded teeth, ContacEZ is better for sure …
  • Handling during use is much easier with ContacEZ.
  • Easier to use … less damage to gingival tissues.
  • The handle is much easier to use … less likely to cut patient’s lip during use.
  • When a tight contact exists, or there is excess flash remaining after composite placement, it’s the best access tool for the job.

A survey of Catapult Elite members also included the following results:

  1. 78% of the respondents said ContacEZ was better than the current system they were using.
  2. 67% of the respondents said ContacEZ increased the speed and efficiency of adjusting contacts.
  3. 76% of the respondents said ContacEZ reduced hand fatigue when compared to other strips.
  4. 100% of the respondents said ContacEZ was comfortable in their hands.

Conclusion
ContacEZ is an excellent system to handle interproximal refnement for many dental restorative procedures. From finishing composites and IPR for orthodontic procedures to cement clean-up for fxed prosthodontics procedures, ContacEZ has it all covered. The Catapult Group of evaluators
overwhelmingly gave this system their approval by a 95 percent rating, and thus ContacEZ receives the Catapult Vote of Confidence as a product.

One of the better parts of my job is that I am constantly exposed to new ways of doing things, some coming from the lab side and some coming from the dental side. I noticed a long time ago that lab techs and
dentists check proximal contacts in very different ways. Clinicians were all taught to use dental floss intraorally; but was this because it was the best way to check contact intensity, or was it just to ensure the patient would be able to get floss through?

Lab technicians never use floss; they use tape and strips to identify and adjust heavy contacts. Until I discovered the ContacEZ system for adjusting
proximal contacts, I only knew the company for the serrated strips they make for getting through contacts inadvertently bonded shut. The Restorative Strip System gives dentists a conservative, predictable way to adjust contacts that makes it easy enough that your dental assistant can adjust the contacts without fear of opening them.

It’s easier to understand if you see the steps in pictures, so go to www.contacez.com/documents/RSSProductInformationSheet.pdf to see the technique in detail. The website also features links to a couple of published articles from the technique’s inventor, Dr. Daniel Kim, whose concept of interproximal relief has been incorporated into our CAD/CAM crown designs here at the lab.

I do a fair amount of Invisalign in my practice and generally enjoy it. If I were to name something I dislike about Invisalign, it would be doing interproximal reduction (IPR). I try my hardest to get ClinChecks where I want them without having to strip enamel away from between the teeth, but sometimes we have no choice-it must be done. I've tried a lot of different methods for this. I've cut lips and gums with discs. I've fought with strips that curl and break. I've tried fine diamond burs that are skinny and little and that can gouge and ledge. Of all of the options I have tried, I have found ContacEZ to be the easiest and safest IPR system on the market.

ContacEZ has interproximal instruments for a lot of applications. The restorative system can adjust, clean, and polish interproximal areas involved with direct or indirect restorations. The hygiene strip can remove stain from interproximal areas that can't easily be instrumented. But the most valuable product they offer, in my opinion, is the IPR Strip System.
The ContacEZ strips are variously sized small, abrasive strips with plastic handles that make them safe and easy. The plastic handle is easy to manipulate, even with one hand. The strips flex and contour around the surfaces of the tooth for an anatomical interproximal reduction without ledges or gouges.
The process begins with the yellow IPR Starter, which is .06 mm thick and can easily be worked into almost any interproximal space. After the yellow IPR Starter has been given a few gentle passes buccolingually through the contact, the red IPR Opener can be used next. At .12 mm, this strip lightly and safely opens the contact further. If more reduction is needed, the dark blue IPR Widener, at .15 mm, is used next. Beyond that, the green IPR Extra-Widener can allow for up to .2 mm of additional reduction. If you need more than .2 mm of reduction, a purple IPR Super-Widener (.25 mm) and a brown IPR Mega-Widener (.3 mm) are also available. There are even some single-sided strips, if needed; both a .1-mm single-sided widener as well as a .12-mm single-sided widener are available to order. These would be good for a situation when you need some IPR next to an anterior crown or a veneer but don't want to strip away any of the porcelain, as you can use them to work only one side of the contact.

Due to some previous rough experiences, I find interproximal reduction during Invisalign treatment to be pretty stressful. The ContacEZ IPR Strip System relieves some of that stress, making the process as simple and painless as possible for both me and the patient. This system has become my go-to and is the standard in my Invisalign kit. Line-drive double in the gap for ContacEZ!
